Review: ISN’T IT ROMANTIC

A young woman named Natalie (Rebel Wilson), disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy (IMDB).

Wilson carries this film admirably and the supporting cast does a good job as well. I believe this is the first film in which Wilson has been the main character because I have mostly seen her as a quirky sidekick. The opening sequence is amusing and disturbing at the same time because Jennifer Saunders of the Absolutely Fabulous fame who portrays Natalie’s mother does damage to her self-esteem telling her stories about how she and her daughter will never amount to anything or get what they want in life and love because of the way they look.

The cinematography is well done because you can really see the difference visually between Natalie’s “real” and “romantic comedy” life. When we see her, in a romantic comedy, she is well dressed and her hair and makeup are perfect.

To say this film is over the top and ridiculous is an understatement but that is the intent. I must say I was not really looking forward to seeing this film. I actually genuinely laughed a couple of times. However, that does not make up for the ridiculousness and the fact that within the first few seconds of the film I knew the entire plot. Seeing fellow Aussie and hunk, Liam Hemsworth on the big screen a lot and shirtless a couple of times was wonderful eye candy. If you are looking for mindless fodder than this is the film for you.
