Review: LATE NIGHT

By Renee’ C.

Rating: 3 (Out of 5 Reels)

A late-night talk-show host, Katherine Newberry (Emma Thompson), suspects that she may soon lose her long-running show (IMDB).

Mindy Kaling has written several television episodes but never a movie and she does an admirable job here. Unfortunately, there is rarely a new thought in Hollywood and the plotline of this film has definitely been done before to varying degrees.

Molly Patel (Kaling) is an aspiring comedy writer who wind a contest that helps her land a job writing comedy at Newberry’s long-running show. The problem is there are several other writers there who are all white men who don’t want a woman coming in trying to change the dynamic.

This is a well written and acted film but feels formulaic. There are few original thoughts in Hollywood these days. This film should be seen because of its message about diversity in the workplace. However, save some money and catch a matinee or wait until it is on cable.
