Movie Review: Look into My Eyes – Interesting Topic for a Documentary That Shows Humanity

For a film that follows a group of New York City psychics, the documentary titled Look into My Eyes might give the impression these psychics might be using hypnosis or other methods with their clients. Despite the brief synopsis, I was unsure what content to anticipate from director Lana Wilson (Miss Americana, “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” TV mini-series). The people who participated in the film, both psychics and clients, appear very open to relaying their stories. I am not as surprised that the clients are willing to be on camera as much as I am of the psychics who have their own stories to share with the public. It is also interesting to note the similarities heard and seen among psychics.

The Director of Photography, Stephen Maing, also captures the sessions very well, nicely lit and framed for each individual client and psychic, with some lovely close-up shots that capture their emotions.

The clients share their stories about many topics, often about their families and other relationships, whether they are still alive or not. There are many variations, and then there are those stories left to be heard when you watch the film. I found these interesting, but they are not news to me, and this is not a dig at the filmmakers. Some viewers will have more knowledge of psychic work than others.

What I did find most interesting were the stories that the psychics shared, and this might be more interesting to viewers who are intrigued by the subject matter. It may or may not alter their current position or opinion about individuals who work in this field. The documentary is not made to point the viewer in either direction, pro or con.

The film shows everyone has similar thoughts and concerns about their life, whether past, present, or future. Each person deals with their life experiences as best they can; for some, this is the outlet they have selected to share their stories. Helping to heal others may be healing in and of itself.

Synopsis – A group of New York City psychics conducts deeply intimate readings for their clients, revealing a kaleidoscope of loneliness, connection, and healing.
