Movie Review: A Sloth Story – An Animated Feature about Family and Forging Forward

Directed by Tania Vincent & Ricard Cussó from a script written by Ryan Greaves, Erica Harrison, and Tania Vincent, this animated adventure feature film shows us a family of four sloths that will surely entertain a young audience with bright and colorful animation.

Synopsis: After a terrifying storm destroys their home, a speedy sloth named Laura and her kooky family move to the big city in their rusted old food truck, hoping to make their business a success.
A Sloth Story does not feature the sloths stereotypically as seen before. The members of the sloth family are the father, Luis (voice of Ben Gorroño); the mother, Gabriella (voice of Olivia Vásquez) daughter, Laura (voice of Teo Vergara); and her older brother, Mani (voice of Facundo Hache Herrera). They are pretty active and move faster than they have previously been depicted as they run a restaurant in Australia. Although faster than some of their other neighbors and customers, they still like the pace of their more rural location.

Mother Nature strikes with a storm that is destructive to their family business. Although Gabriella is hesitant to change, the family moves and heads toward the city to start over with a food truck. This business strategy is certainly not a new way to start a food business, as has often been seen for the past few decades in Austin, TX, featuring various cuisines from around the world. Gabriella has a treasured book of family recipes and plans to continue using them.

Laura is more outgoing than her artistic brother. She is quick to explore the community they have moved to and make some new friends. She soon discovers she wants a life other than continuing in the family business, and of course, her mother finds this disappointing. The story typically shows that children have their own ideas of what to become in the world when they grow up. Gabriella needs help adjusting to changing the whole menu and the pace required for a food truck. Laura has good ideas, and this necessitates her to be more present for the business to succeed. Once this takes over her time and she cannot be with her friends, it is predictable that there will be cracks in the relationships.

A cheetah named Dotti Pace (voice of Leslie Jones) owns the fast-food restaurant, Zoom Fuel. She doesn’t like the competition and in routine villain style, she wants the food truck customers. Dottie quickly uses her villain skills to create havoc for the sloth family. There is some attempt at humor in the script, but it is not comedic overall. It is certainly family-friendly and highlights the family bond.
