AFF The Writer – The World Premiere at AFF, Set to Screen at the Lone Star Film Festival, introduces a film that explores deep emotional themes.

Exploring the themes of family, success, and generational trauma, this short film has an excellent cast to portray the characters, the writer, and those who surround him. Written and directed by Austin Glasser and Luke Maddenwald, the film stars actors from “Yellowstone,” including Jefferson White, Neal McDonough (“Tulsa King”), and Sara Paxton (Weapons, Aquamarine (2006), “Good Girls” TV series (2018-2019), and Blonde (Netflix, 2022). Additional cast includes Sherri Saum (“The Fosters” 2013-2018), “Good Trouble” (2019 – 2024), and Kariana Karhu.

The Writer tells the tale of Henry (Jefferson White), a reclusive film writer haunted by the ghost of his father (Neal McDonough) at their old fishing cabin. Manipulative agent Lynn (Sherri Saum) pushes him, while recent industry success keeps him writing scripts for a franchise he doesn’t care about. His isolation strains his relationships with his wife, Zoe (Sara Paxton), and daughter, Amber (Kariana Karhu), leading to an explosive confession of his faults, fears, and regrets after time away from what he values most.

I watched the film twice during the Austin Film Festival, as I found the story to be engaging and authentic, particularly in how the main character pursued his goals despite facing numerous challenges that kept him moving forward.

This quote is from the press materials at the Austin Film Festival. “Filming in Texas was special. Showing it here feels right,” said Writer and Director Austin Glasser. “I hope viewers find courage to follow their dreams, discover new paths, and remember happiness—ours and others—should guide us.” This quote clearly explains the protagonist.

The Writer screens at the 2025 Lone Star Film Festival on Tuesday, November 4, at 4:45 p.m. inside the Modern at 3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. It is part of the festival’s shorts block, followed by a Q&A.

After the Lone Star Film Festival screening, the filmmakers will submit the film to other festivals. For updates, follow them on Instagram and Facebook.
