Cine Las Americas 2026: Award Winning American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez Captivates

The Opening Night Film for the 28th annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival was American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez, directed by David Alvarado (Bill Nye: Science Guy, The Immortalists). Joining Mr. Alvarado on the red-carpet festivities was Daniel “Danny” Valdez, actor /brother to Luis Valdez. This was the Austin Premiere, following its initial release at the Sundance Film Festival.

American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez is a 2026 documentary – IMDb Synopsis: Luis Valdez elevates Chicano narratives to cinema through Zoot Suit and La Bamba, overcoming political and industry pushback to create landmark films that broaden and honor America’s cultural story.

The film has awards and nominations from screening at prior festivals:

Sundance Film Festival: 2026 Nominee Grand Jury Prize – Documentary

2026 Winner – Audience Award – U.S. Documentary

Miami Film Festival: 2026 Nominee, Knight Documentary Achievement Award – Best Documentary.

The documentary features interviews with Cheech Marin, Dolores Huerta, Edward James Olmos, Linda Ronstadt, and others. I found it to be very engaging and provided details of Valdez’s life and career that I was not aware of or had forgotten. I will recommend this film as essential historical viewing for people of all generations.

Interview on the Red Carpet at the AFS Cinema:

Q – Danny – What does it feel like to see a documentary about your brother?

A – “I think it is a real opportunity to show people our history, about a large family who grew through all sorts of conditions. We started as farm workers, worked through all sorts of conditions, found art, and used it to communicate. We expressed who we are – about our identity, our culture, and embraced our community as a part of us. “

Q- David – How did you get involved in the documentary about Luis Valdez?

A: I met Luis when I was in college, about when I was 21 years old. He inspired me with the story of his career. Later, I asked myself about how I got through my career doing multiple features and working in television. Ten years later, I remembered him, inspired by him going from farm worker to Broadway and Hollywood.

In 2022, I wondered if there was a documentary about Luis Valdez. I Googled, like what documentary filmmakers do, using “Luis Valdez documentary.” “I found that a documentary had not been done! It blew my mind, and then I reached out to him.”

David spoke of Danny being part of the grape strike and Teatro, saying, “he is a living embodiment of the whole era.”

Languages: English and Spanish, with English subtitles. Run Time: 1h 32m
