Directed by action auteur William Kauffman (Shrapnel, Warhorse One), the action epic where “bullets fly, bodies drop, and the tension ramps up with every passing minute” (Action Reloaded) stars LaMonica Garrett (Takeover, “Designated Survivor”) as a US Special Forces veteran who launches a deadly rescue mission in Ukraine during the early days of the Russian invasion.
The mission is deeply personal as his relative, Riley, an aid worker, is held hostage by Russian mercenaries. To save her, he is forced to navigate a brutal landscape of fire and betrayal, risking everything on this high-stakes hostage rescue.
I have watched many films about war and hostage rescues, but I don’t recall one with so much non–stop action. So much so that the constant barrage of gunfire became almost exhausting to my ears. The filmmaker excelled in creating the sights and sounds that become everyday life for those who live in war zones. A life I cannot begin to imagine. The scenes are intense as the audience sees the mercenaries and hostages.
Conner’s (LaMonica Garrett) performance feels authentic and dedicated to his rescue mission. He is working alongside Dany (Andrew Howard, The Odyssey, The Accountant 2) as his guide in the war zone. They don’t know each other, but they each have their reasons for going deep into dangerous territory. The bond they develop in this script kept me engaged and elevated it above other films that don’t have this kind of character depth. The supporting cast is also good, including Jason Patric (The Lost Boys, Armor), Rosemary Yaneva (Subservience), and Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick, The Matrix Reloaded, Atomic Blonde).
The film runs about 111 minutes and is rated R (language throughout, strong violence/bloody images). Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0_t2HOsDsY
