Texas Performing Arts presents Broadway in Austin with performances continuing this week at the Bass Concert Hall through September 27, 2026. Mrs. Doubtfire is part of the Texas Performing Arts 26-27 Broadway in Austin Season. I attended the Opening Night performance on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, and it was everything I expected and more. I was looking forward to the comedy I fondly remember from the feature film, Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), starring Robin Williams, Sally Field, and Pierce Brosnan. Although I hadn’t seen the film in quite some time, I hoped the musical would at least match the film’s level of humor. The talent I saw and heard on stage exceeded my expectations. Every actor delivered an excellent performance in dialogue and especially in the vocals, whether they were leading characters or supporting. I am not alone in my praise, as my guest was thoroughly entertained and impressed by the talent. I don’t know if the theater was sold out, but it felt full, and everyone laughed, clapped, and cheered at the end.
Based on the original direction by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, the new musical comedy features a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell and music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, the Tony Award-nominated team behind “Something Rotten!”
Craig Allen Smith stars as Daniel and is simply a very talented performer who displays a wide range of skills in comedy, drama, music, and more. He is one artist to watch in this production and in future work. Alanis Sophia stars as Lydia Hillard, Chance Challen is Christopher Hillard, with Vivian Atencio as Natalie Hillard. About: Out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard will do anything for his kids. After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father—a hysterical and heartfelt story about holding onto your loved ones against all odds.
Weekday performances through Thursday are at 7:30 p.m., and Friday is at 8 p.m. Weekend performances are Saturday at 2 & 8 p.m., and Sunday at 1 & 6:30 p.m. Tickets start at $42.
