Movie News: Austin Filmmaker’s Short Film, In Tow, to screen in Austin

Filmmaker Sharon Arteaga’s film, In Tow, premiered in Dallas in April 2023 and at the Austin Film Festival in October 2023, among many other festivals. I attended the Austin Film Festival and saw the film she wrote and directed. I highly recommend seeing her film this weekend. This Friday, October 23rd, the community can see the screening for free at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.

The City of Austin’s cultural center offers “Cine Familiar, a family film program that brings people together through the power of movies. As described by the center, “The program creates a welcoming space where families and community members can watch films, enjoy time together, and connect through shared stories. Cine Familiar features films that celebrate culture, family, identity, and the experiences that bring us closer together.”

The filmmaker describes her film on her Facebook post as “a family-friendly short action dramedy.” She says she will attend with some of her family.

The film is in English and has Spanish subtitles.

Film Synopsis: In Tow is a 21-minute action-adventure short film dramedy that takes its audience on an emotional ride through fluctuating mother-daughter dynamics and different responses to poverty under one roof: exhaustion on one end and an obsession with living beyond one’s means on the other. The film’s added complexity comes from its setting in the tense divide that often forms between first-generation kids and their immigrant parents. Ultimately, In Tow is a dramedy about losing home and rediscovering it in the most unexpected moments.

No RSVP needed; the center is at 600 River St., Austin, TX 78701.
