Review: JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

Rating: 4.5 (out of 5 Reels)

The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds (IMDB).  The trailer for this film garnered my attention because I noticed that Nicholas Hoult (Jack) and Ewan McGregor (Elmont) were in it and I am a huge fan of both actors.  Additionally, Bryan Singer directed it and I knew I must see this film.

Hoult has come a long way since I saw him in About a Boy opposite Hugh Grant ten years ago.  I also absolutely loved his role as “R” in Warm Bodies which is one of my favorite films of the year and I cannot recommend enough.  Hoult is definitely cementing his place among the acting elite because he is so unassuming but self-assured in his roles.  McGregor has been acting for decades and I count him among the best actors on the planet.  I especially like his role because he portrays a knight and looks rather dashing I must say (eye candy for the ladies).  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another great actor, Stanley Tucci (Roderick) because he plays an absolutely fantastic villain.  I hold Singer in high esteem because of his directing previous films such as X-Men and Superman Returns as well as a long list of producing accomplishments.

Yes, this film is in 3D but I didn’t mind it because in this case it only added to the overall great movie going experience.  The visual effects in this film are expertly done and I believe the 3D only adds to the depth of this film.  Most 3D films in my opinion are under par and somehow making them in 3D will hide that fact but that is definitely not the case here.  I must also mention the wonderful costumes and overall look of this film because it is fantastic.  This film is an excellent spin on an old tale that children of all ages will enjoy and I highly recommend it to anyone.
