The film explores desert life’s lifestyle, beauty, and dysfunction, offering an authentic portrayal rarely seen in cinema. The Middle is a coming-of-age drama set against the sun-stained backdrop of Barstow, California. It explores the intricate balance of morality, loyalty, and the lasting impact of choices on a young girl’s life.
The 12-minute short caught my attention from the onset, and by the end, I knew there was so much more to the story that was yet to be told. Everything appears very authentic, from the story that can possibly take place anywhere to the setting and performances. I look forward to the feature film that will be developed from this short.
Award-winning director Sylvia Ray’s short film The Middle will have its LA premiere at the HollyShorts Film Festival on Monday, August 12, at 7:30 PM at the iconic TCL Chinese Theater. Sylvia Ray, a Chicana/Korean American director raised in Barstow, CA, brings a personal touch to the film inspired by her experiences. Her previous work, including Preggers, has received accolades such as Best Comedy Short at the Arizona International Film Festival. Sylvia Ray is a director dedicated to creating impactful stories with themes of empowerment, identity, and grief navigation. Based in Los Angeles, she focuses on enhancing BIPOC representation in film.
Key crew members include Director of Photography Mariscela Beatríz Méndez, Editor Patrick Lawrence, Composer Jimmy LaValle, and Production Designer Rose Westerman. Together, they have crafted a visually stunning and emotionally resonant film that serves as a blueprint for the future.
