Review: THE KITCHEN

Rating: 4 (Out of 5 Reels)

The wives of New York gangsters, Kathy (Melissa McCarthy), Claire Walsh (Elisabeth Moss), and Ruby O’Carroll (Tiffany Haddish), in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1970s continue to operate their husbands’ rackets after they’re locked up in prison (IMDB).

Watching Kathy, Claire and Ruby take the reigns of their incarcerated husbands’ rackets is interesting to watch because it brings them out of their society driven subdued roles as women in the 1970s. Women in the seventies were expected to have the children and take care of the home, not run gangster rackets. These women had to take over because after their husband’s went to jail their remaining gangsters didn’t take care of them as promised.

This film definitely has the look and feel of the seventies from the clothes to the hair styles. I especially liked Kathy’s winged hair because it is the iconic seventies. In their own ways, each character stands up to their fear and fights for what they want no matter the cost. This film is well acted and made that does provide a twist at the end that is unexpected.
