SXSW 2025 Movie Review: Bunny – A lot of laughs, a dash of danger

We first find Bunny (Mo Stark) running down a shabby New York street, barely making it to his apartment. We won’t find out for a while what he was running from. He and his wife argue; it’s mild, but police are called for a noise complaint and hassle them a bit. These cops tend to spend a lot of time in the neighborhood, they exit, but hang out in front of the building the rest of the day, questioning neighbors and asking for suggestions on the best local eateries.

On the first floor, three young ladies are planning a party that night; they ask Bunny for help with lifting and carrying supplies. In fact, everyone in the building asks for Bunny’s help with chores, as he is tall, athletic, and very muscular. He cheerfully helps all his neighbors. It’s his birthday today but the party is not for him.

Bunny and his wife also occasionally rent out part of the apartment (via Airbnb) which is strange because it’s tiny and jam-packed. They have a new customer today to add to the chaos. Speaking of customers, it seems that earlier, the reason Bunny was running was that he also does sex work, and a rich client was not happy and sent
his driver after Bunny to beat him up. There is a bad smell coming from the apartment of a junkie who no one has seen for a while, it turns out like you would guess, Bunny and his friend/shadow Dino (Ben Jacobson) try to help the building manager Linda (Linda Rong Mei Chen) by disposing of the body, before long they have two bodies to dispose of, through no fault of their own.

The hilarity really begins at this point, dodging cops and rich guys and trying to act as if nothing’s wrong. The audience clearly loved this movie, it was also a favorite of mine. Director Ben Jacobson is an actor, and this is his first time directing. He also co-wrote. We learned at the Q&A that the apartment is the actual home of
the filmmakers, and many of the actors in the movie were actual tenants there. If they can do this on a small budget, it looks like they all have bright futures.
