While awaiting the return of her husband from his work retreat in Tasmania, Ava (Daisy Ridley) hears the terrible news of a military experiment gone wrong that has killed half a million people. He was at the center of the disaster and is most likely dead. It was an EMP that shut down people’s brains. Unfortunately, some of the people came back to life but were more zombies than humans and must be shot so they don’t kill others.
Ava, a physical therapist, volunteers for a body retrieval unit being sent to the island. They will go and identify bodies, if possible, which will then be buried or otherwise disposed of. The military will accompany them to execute any of the un-dead. Once on the job, Ava meets fellow worker Clay, a free spirit who doesn’t seem altruistic.
Of course, Ava’s real reason for going is to try to find her husband’s body. The two form a workable alliance, slip away from the group and drive to the south of the island, where the retreat resort is located. There are plenty of run-ins with the zombie-type
survivors along the way, and worse problems with a real human after Ava and Clay are separated.
After many poignant and scary situations, the story reaches an exciting and unexpected finale, Clay (Brenton Thwaites) and Daisy Ridley, our main characters, both give compelling performances and make this a movie you won’t want to miss. Director/writer Zak
Hilditch has made good use of a relatively small budget to squeeze out plenty of thrills.
