THE DRAMA

Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson) are less than one week away from their expensive wedding. They are well off and live together in a beautiful, spacious apartment in a big city. They and two close friends, Rachel (Alana Haim, from Licorice Pizza) and Mike ( Mamoudou Athie from Kinds of Kindness), who are to be the matron of honor and best man, are together at the end of a late-night dinner where they’ve all had too much wine. Someone says, “Confess the worst thing you’ve ever done.” Everyone tells their secret. When it comes to Emma’s turn, what she says stuns the others. Rachel is particularly upset, but the three are truly shocked.

What Emma confesses to is not something she did; it was something she planned, but then changed her mind about doing. In contrast, the other three admitted to things that they actually did, and they were pretty contemptible acts that actually affected people’s lives.

The problem is now, can Charlie forgive and/or forget, or will this permanently change the way he feels about Emma? They have many discussions over the following days, but the relationship seems to be hanging in the balance. As each day passes, things get more chaotic.

The Drama is fraught with emotion, humor, and peril; the chemistry between the two stars feels warm and genuine. Zoe Winters as the wedding photographer, Hailey Gates as Charlie’s co-worker, and Jordyn Curet as a young Emma are all outstanding in this well-paced production. Writer/Director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario) has given us an entertaining, sensitive glimpse into a modern-day relationship.
