The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place Sunday night with amiable, but mostly absent host Jimmy Fallon handling the emcee duties. After a rather amusing and lengthy introduction to the festivities, it seemed like the host barely appeared afterward, occasionally introducing award presenters. Otherwise, the awards show, held by the Hollywood Foreign press, honored achievements in film and television for 2016, and seemed to mostly go without a hitch. Sure, there were some occasional hiccups here and there, and some awkward moments; however, the presentation trucked along at a steady pace with La La Land emerging as the big winner this year.
The most memorable presentation of the night, however, began with a beautiful and heartfelt introduction by actress Viola Davis. This year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, which honors a lifetime achievement in movies, went to actress Meryl Streep who followed Davis’s introduction with an equally memorable and passionate, politically-charged speech that served as a plea to protect journalists and immigrants from President-elect Trump. As the new president takes office later this month, this is sure to be just the first of several political statements by artists unhappy with the direction our country is headed under new leadership. I am one-hundred percent certain other statements will get made in other awards shows, particularly when the Academy Awards take place on February 17.
Well, enough about the politics, this piece is intended as a recap of the results which often predict the nominees and winners of other awards including the Oscars.
