An undercover MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron), is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents (IMDB).
We need more kick-ass women super spies’ who hold their own in a fight. Theron is a welcomed addition to this genre that includes Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johannson. Theron plays a cool and calm MI6 agent who not only plays the game of intrigue but also stays alive because she knows how to protect herself.
We all know James McAvoy is a great actor based on his previous roles as the antagonist or the protagonist. His portrayal of David Percival, an undercover agent in Berlin, is spot on and extremely convincing. I should also mention Bill Skarsgard who is making a name for himself in Hollywood along with his brother Alexander of True Blood fame and his father Stellan who has been in countless films over the past few decades, most recently the Avengers movies. Bill does a great job in his role as Merkel even though he is not on the screen for too long.
This film is entertaining because we get to watch Broughton traverse the intricate spy world in Berlin in the late 1980’s. The music is great for those from the 1980’s era and singing along to yourself is expected. The cinematography, writing and acting is adequate but even with all of those plusses; there is really no need to see it on the big screen. I would wait for cable or Netflix.
