In 2014, the country of Syria underwent a coup and revolution which left the infamous ISIS in charge.  Though ISIS, at first, seemed like they had the nation’s best interest in mind, their extremist ideology proved otherwise.  As a group of citizens began to witness some of the atrocities ISIS was committing to any dissenters, these citizens formed an organization named, “Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently”  These people attempt to serve their nation and the world around them as journalists exposing the real truth behind ISIS and the danger they impose on the world.

The journalists began blogging and sharing videos on the internet, hoping to educate the world, and ISIS soon caught wind of their work and targeted them as enemies of the state.  Some of these courageous men would flee their country with a few contacts strategically placed to give them more intel to benefit their cause.  Though some have managed to survive, others have been executed by ISIS agents who have discovered them.

Directed by Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land, Escape Fire), City of Ghosts is a captivating documentary which tells the story of these brave people fighting for the truth. It reveals more information about this alarming situation which has now affected the world.  Heineman’s film offers a insightful glimpse into the lives of these brave journalists and what they are going through, as well as the losses they have suffered to get the truth out there. It is a very important film that everyone should watch.
