If you have ever been to a comic book or other large convention in your life, the documentary Surviving Supercon will provide some insight in a behind-the-scenes look as to what it takes to run a convention of this size. If it does not give you more respect for producers of such an event, then you may have missed the point.
One of Florida’s biggest conventions, Surviving Supercon co-creators Mike Broder and Sandy Martin are very open as they tell their story of what it takes to plan such an event, as well as all that it takes to run it safely for the thousands who attend (and for themselves). Aside from learning about the con, viewers learn more about how Mike started the convention and how it grew with the help of Sandy. Their life was initially about the convention and yet a love story begins and ends in marriage – at the con!
Sandy is excellent in following up with even the smallest detail and security is a priority. When the security team sent to work the con is extremely unprepared, Sandy is not afraid to be face to face with the contracted people, identify the problem at hand and physically show them what they should be doing for the show to be safe. She is a ball of energy and if any staff or contractor does not comply with expectations, they certainly will hear from Sandy. She is not about to have anyone mess up their business that is a year in the making.
For anyone interested in learning more about these conventions, this is a sample of must see viewing, especially if planning to attend one in the future. Plan your trip, your costume (if you want) and walking shoes, for sure!
