The Lego experience at SXSWEdu 2025

Attending the LEGO Experience at SXSWEdu was a delightful adventure that perfectly blended play with education. One of the highlights was a fun workshop where small groups collaborated to reroute salmon and smolt around a dam using LEGO bricks. This hands-on activity sparked creativity and fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills, making it a fantastic way to engage with important environmental concepts.

The workshop emphasized the theme, “where curiosity meets inquiry-based discovery,” and it truly lived up to that promise. Participants were guided through interactive lessons that encouraged us to think critically about the challenges salmon face during their migration journeys. Using LEGO® Education Science, we explored various aspects of Earth and Space Science, Life Science, Engineering and Technology, and Physical Science. It was intriguing to see how these subjects intertwined as we tackled real-world problems in a fun and accessible way.

The flexibility of the new K-8 solution, featuring over 120 hands-on lessons, was evident throughout the workshop. It’s clear why 82% of science teachers worldwide are craving more hands-on learning opportunities. The LEGO Experience provided a vivid illustration of how interactive materials can drive engagement in the classroom, allowing students to immerse themselves in learning while having a blast.

As we manipulated the LEGO pieces to create pathways for the salmon, witnessing the enthusiasm and collaboration among participants was inspiring. There was a palpable sense of accomplishment as we successfully rerouted the fish around the dam, showcasing how teamwork can lead to innovative solutions.

Overall, the LEGO Experience at SXSWEdu was a perfect blend of education and fun, demonstrating the power of hands-on learning in fostering curiosity and inquiry. Whether you’re an educator looking for new teaching strategies or simply someone interested in creatively engaging with science, this experience is not to be missed. It left me inspired and excited about the possibilities of using LEGO to enhance learning in the classroom and beyond.
