SXSW 2026 Review: A Cowboy in London at State Theatre

When the SXSW Film and Television Festival announcements were made for 2026, I absolutely knew there were two films at the top of my list. On March 15, it was Los Lobos Native Sons, and on the final day of the festival, March 18th, was A Cowboy in London by filmmaker Jared Christopher, who directed, served as cinematographer, and produced. Serving on the crew as an additional camera operator is Taylor Day Grace-Crockett. Charley Crockett is a Grammy-winning artist in 2026 (Best Regional Roots Music Album – Vocals) and has been twice nominated for a Grammy this year (2026) for Best Traditional Country Album and Best Americana Album (2025). He has won twice at the Austin Music Awards, both in 2022 in the Musician of the Year and Best Country categories.

This was the Texas Premiere of A Cowboy in London, a documentary feature presented in the 24 Beats Per Second Screening Section. I enjoyed how the filmmaker captures not only portions of the multiple concerts but also Taylor Day Grace-Crockett’s more personal side of being on tour, backstage footage, and so much more. I am happy to see how many fans Charley Crockett has in London and how he interacts with them.

This is not his first film, and the following films are listed in his Filmography on Wikipedia: The Road To Music City USA (Documentary, 2021) and Live from the Ryman (2023, Concert film). Broke (First film role, Snowplow Driver, 2025) and $10 Cowboy (2025, Documentary surrounding the release of his 2024 album “$10 Cowboy”). This latter film premiered at the Austin Film Festival on October 24th, 2025, and I also truly enjoyed it.

About: Filmmaker Jared Christopher delivers an incisive glimpse into Charley Crockett’s transformative week in London, capturing his journey through three sold-out shows at Hoxton Hall, candid media interviews, and revealing moments with fiancée Taylor Grace. Through verité-style footage that blends Taylor’s camcorder diary and professional film, the narrative focuses on Crockett’s artistic challenges—such as forgotten lyrics and engaging with topics like America and AI in music. The film highlights Crockett’s vulnerability and defiance as he candidly critiques the music industry while striving for greatness. Cast: Charley Crockett, Taylor Day Grace-Crockett, Joe David Walters, Simon Slater.

In addition to the Texas Premiere of his film, Charley performed at the SXSW Music Festival that evening at Stubb’s. I had hoped to attend his performance as the finale of my 2026 festival experience, but I didn’t have the energy for the late show.

Charley Crockett returned to the Waterloo Records Stage in Austin on Wednesday, April 8th. He is back with “Age of the Ram,” the third and final Sagebrush Trilogy installment, co-produced by Shooter Jennings. The album features 20 new recordings and marks the culmination of Charley’s sonic exploration across three albums, resulting in his most realized and compelling work yet.

Age of the Ram is now available at waterloorecords.com.
