SXSW 2026: THE MAN WITH THE BIG HAT

Another great entry in the 24 Beats Per Second Section, The Man with the Big Hat documentary tells the story of Texas Progressive Country artist, Steven Fromholz. Prior to watching this film, I had never heard of the singer-songwriter. The film did catch my interest, though, because I am a fan of outlaw country music like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, as well as folk musicians such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. I did some research about Fromholz and his music, and his story seemed like my kind of jam.

Steven Fromholz made a name for himself during the 1970s when he emerged from the Texas Folk and Country music scene. Known for his rural storytelling songs, Fromholz never became a household name, but would have a bigger impact on other artists who admired his songwriting. The life of a traveling musician would certainly take its toll on his relationships with his wives and children. He would eventually slow down his life to get to know his children better and enjoy other activities he sacrificed in pursuit of his musical career. His legacy would influence the work of Hoyt Axton, John Denver, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Lyle Lovett.

Director Austin Sayre does an exceptional job telling Steven Fromholz’s personal story and celebrating his musical legacy. It is a fascinating, moving, and sometimes emotional film flavored with Texas rural charm. The Man with the Big Hat is a must-see for fans of Texas roots music.
