Alpha Gang Review: An All-Star Alien Comedy That Gets Lost in Its Own Weirdness

Fantastic Fest 2026

Alpha Gang was one of the strangest films I saw at Fantastic Fest 2026, and I am still not entirely sure what to make of it. Directed by David and Nathan Zellner, this science-fiction comedy pairs an impressive cast with vivid colors, memorable costumes, and an enthusiastic commitment to absurdity. It was not boring, but it was so darn strange that, overall, I found it stupid and, frankly, pointless.

The story follows alien invaders who arrive on Earth, disguised as a 1950s biker gang, intent on conquering it. Their mission begins to unravel when they experience human emotions, including love, fear, and confusion. These feelings become a complication these would-be conquerors cannot control, turning their invasion into an increasingly bizarre encounter with humanity.

The cast certainly adds to the intrigue: Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Dave Bautista, Léa Seydoux, Riley Keough, Lily-Rose Depp, Bae Doona, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. form an unusually star-studded ensemble. Seeing that much talent assembled for such an outlandish premise is part of the appeal. Even when the story seemed to be going nowhere, the familiar faces kept me interested in what might happen next.

The vivid colors and conspicuous costuming give the film a strong visual identity. Its biker styling helps establish an exaggerated world that suits the characters’ peculiar predicament. I enjoyed watching it, and the visual choices gave me something to appreciate when the narrative offered little direction.

I read its central theme as an exploration of what makes us human: emotions complicate control and ambition, yet they also make connection possible. Having alien invaders discover those feelings offers a clever way to examine vulnerability. For me, though, the theme gets lost beneath the film’s relentless eccentricity. I could recognize the idea without feeling the story did much with it.

Bewilderment best describes my reaction, though that should not be confused with boredom. Alpha Gang held my attention in an absurdly curious way, continually making me wonder where this strange business could go. I cannot say it amounted to much, but I kept watching, caught somewhere between amusement and disbelief.
