AFF 2026: Saving 4 Seconds Documentary World Premiere Highlights Help to Prevent Suicides

The new feature documentary from director Rachel Klein, Saving 4 Seconds, is about one family’s effort to install a safety railing on the side of the Golden Gate Bridge to help prevent suicides. I find the documentary eye-opening, from the statistics and interview information to how long families/others have been advocates.

In partnership with the Golden Gate Bridge, the filmmakers show never-before-seen bridge CCTV camera footage of employees saving the lives of strangers at their lowest point. These people save upwards of 245 people per year from suicide and never take a bow. They get back to work. Painters, ironworkers, and staff are constantly hearing people in distress on the radio. They volunteer to help go over the rail to save strangers. They train to protect themselves when helping others and are always on the lookout for someone in distress.

The documentary is great when interviews with the families of the deceased are heard; the bridge staff shares their insights and experiences, as well as the politics involved in learning about the suicides, but not arriving at a consensus to act on the issue. This story doesn’t shy away from revealing the Bridge’s history with this, especially when those in charge know it has a reputation as “the most popular place to end your life on Earth,” as described in a press release for the film.

I am always glad to see a documentary that provides information from the different people impacted by an issue. This one doesn’t shy away from showing how many times the issue was brought up for action, only to be let down by the powers that be, time and time again.

The feature documentary had its World Premiere at AFF on October 31st.

The film has another screening during the festival on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 4:30 pm, at the Galaxy Theater – Austin, 6700 Middle Fiskville Rd., Austin, TX 78752.
