Austin Film Festival 2022: THE INSPECTION

The Inspection had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and was the closing night selection at the New York Film Festival. The Austin Film Festival will now be hosting The Inspection as a Marquee film at the State Theatre Saturday, October 29 at 8:45pm.

The Inspection is written, directed, and inspired by the life of Elegance Bratton. The Inspection is his narrative fiction debut and stars Jeremy Pope in a breakout performance as a gay black Marine who has been cast out by his mother (Gabrielle Union).

The film cast stars former Austin/Rio Grande Valley TX resident actor Raúl Castillo (We the Animals), McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, Nicholas Logan, Eman Esfandi, Andrew Kai, Aubrey Joseph with Bokeem Woodbine.

Synopsis: In Elegance Bratton’s deeply moving film inspired by his own story, a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.

Raúl Castillo is an actor with notable performances across film, television, and theater. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Paps in the critically acclaimed independent feature We the Animals, based on the Justin Torres novel of the same name and directed by Jeremiah Zagar, which brought him an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Currently, he can be seen in Apple’s Sundance darling from Cooper Raiff, Cha Cha Real Smooth, Jeremiah Zagar’s Netflix feature, Hustle, and Mattson Tomlin’s feature film debut, Mother/Android on Hulu.
