From Kazakhstan, comes an uproarious horror comedy that actually made me laugh so hard I cried. The movie follows a trio of Kazakh men looking to get away from it all by taking a fishing trip in the woods. Nevermind that they know so little about fishing, camping or anything of the sort, these guys simply need to escape from their life struggles. Well, their little peaceful break eventually becomes anything, but relaxing when they first encounter a band of bungling gangsters, followed by bizarre killer who has mad fighting skills.
Written and directed by Ernar Nurgaliev, who co-wrote the movie with Daniyar Soltanbayev, Ilyas Toleu, Anuar Turizhigitov, Alisher Utev, Aybasov Zhandos, Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It is an insanely hilarious and absolutely outrageous comedy that is sure to become a cult classic among fans of comedy. The filmmakers have blended violence, gore, physical gags, and bizarre scenarios. The only movies that could possibly compare to this film would be Tucker and Dale vs. Evil or maybe even Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, but a little less ridiculous.
With solid, skillful direction, wild and crazy ideas, and tremendously amusing characters, this movie could easily become my favorite film of Fantasia 2021. It is definitely one of those movies that probably won’t reach the numbers of audiences it deserves; therefore, I must ask anyone reading this review to spread the word about this awesomely crazy film. That is, if you have watched it and love it as much as I do. It’s definitely has some roughness around the edges, but that is also part of its charm. It certainly succeeds better than some American comedies with larger budgets do. Please spread the word about Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It if you can and will!
