Fantastic Fest 2015 Review: LAZER TEAM

Rating: 3 (Out of 4 Stars)

My Fantastic Fest got started with a science fiction movie of the late-night comedy variety.  From Rooster Teeth Productions, a company known for their online shorts, comes their first feature film.  When the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence discovers that the threat of attack is imminent, government officials groom a chosen guardian, “the one true warrior of Earth” (Alan Ritchson) to defend the planet. The plans for Earth’s defense go awry when a special battle suit falls into the hand of group of ordinary “losers”.  Each of these four men end up attached to individual pieces of the suit which no one is able to safely remove. With the fate of the world in their hands, these regular “Joes” must put aside their differences and rise above their weaknesses to prevent the destruction of their world.

Written and directed by Matt Hullum who co-wrote with Bernie Burns, Chris Demarais, and Josh Flanagan, Lazer Team is silly and goofy fun with medium serving of amusing raunch.  Not all of the humor works, but enough does to keep its audiences entertained.  The strength of the film lies in its quick witted deliveries by the cast, but sometimes the over-reliance on physical pratfalls gets old after awhile. I must say that I am rather impressed with the visual effects of the film which actually hold up well in comparison to films with larger budgets.  Rooster Teeth may have not made a huge breakthrough with their feature debut, but it is a fine way to start.
