Comedian/actor Will Ferrell met writer Andrew Steele when he got his big break as a performer on Saturday Night Live. The two entertainers not only became creative partners, but they also became the best of friends. This relationship would endure the tests of time and a major change that Andrew undertakes with his life. Andrew began transitioning into a woman a few years ago and now lives as a woman named Harper.
Director Josh Greenbaum reveals Harper’s journey with this wonderful documentary, Will & Harper. Though not the typical Fantastic Fest film, it is high on my list of top films I watched at the festival. The audience learns a lot about Harper’s past life as Andrew and her struggles while living as a man. The film is also a testament to the genuinely beautiful friendship both Will and Harper share, and it will also educate and enlighten you about the transgender experience.
The film also reveals Ferrell’s reaction to this major change and how he came to understand and accept Harper’s decision to transition. To further bond and connect as they have never before, the two buddies embark on a road trip to some of Harper’s favorite stomping grounds from her past. The trip reflects both the positive and negative responses trans people must encounter and endure in our current political climate.
Will & Harper is not just a documentary; it’s a deeply emotional journey that resonates with the audience. It’s a story of love, friendship, and acceptance, beautifully captured on screen. This film is a must-watch, now available for streaming on Netflix.
