Flapjax was once a popular menu item, but it was eliminated after some customers reported issues. The fast-food joint needs an economic boost, so a corporate manager uses the idea to bring back the beloved food item with a few tweaks. Once the “new” Flapjax arrives at the designated store, the staff is told not to consume any of the product. Soon after the grand opening, you see customers with insatiable appetites.
While I enjoyed the film overall, it has some humor, but I didn’t find it laugh-out-loud comedy. There is a sadness running through the story as the lead character, Arrow Bentley (Gabriel Cagan), is trying to do his best, but it doesn’t take him anywhere – he remains stuck in his job and life. Watching and listening to his mother, Eleanor Bentley (Georgia Kate Haege), gives the viewer a sense of the issues at the root of his emotional limitations.
Arrow’s co-worker, Louie (Madeline Barbush), is sympathetic and helpful at work and in his personal life, but she is on the brink of leaving for another job. Although I am not familiar with her past work, I found her acting reminiscent of some of the comedic work of past Saturday Night Live actors. She brought that vibe to the film, and it was enjoyable to see her doing what it took as an “assistant manager” to manage the chaos.
Synopsis: An overzealous fast-food manager unknowingly executes the plans of an alien race by serving a deadly new menu item: FLAPJAX.
Fantastic Fest celebrated the World Premiere on Thursday, September 17 at 11:30 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. Rocko Zevenbergen’s horror-comedy looks like a throwback with body horror – lots of gooeyness, lots of slime reminiscent of the years gone by.
Zevenbergen wrote the screenplay with Estevan Muñoz, who also stars in the film. The additional cast includes Kaoru Koide, Takumi Mitobe, and Daniel Berkey.
And as far as the aliens, you will have to watch the film- I won’t spoil it for you.
