Fireflies at El Mozote – A Civil War Drama Features a Young Survivor’s Story

The late filmmaker Ernesto Melara’s Salvadoran Civil War drama follows a young survivor seeking justice after the massacre in his village. Written and directed by Melara, the film is set in early 1980s El Salvador and recounts the story of a 10-year-old boy, Jose (Mateo Honles), who survives the massacre, and his quest to bring justice to his deceased family as the bloody civil war continues. Before passing, the director stated, “This film is dedicated to the victims of war violence in El Salvador, and elsewhere throughout Latin America and the rest of the world.” (This quote was provided by the studio in press materials.)

As with any film about war, this is a very violent drama that features bloodshed and may disturb viewers. It is most important not to turn away from the knowledge of acts of violence that continue to this day across the world, many of which include the death of innocent people, including scores of children. I have reviewed many genres of films for many years, and although some are dark and horrifying, it is always much harder to watch a film based on true events, and there is little empathy from others for the innocents.

While the film does not go deeply into the history of the war, its main message centers on the actions of the military, the loss of hundreds of citizens, and the efforts of those who tried to alert the world about the atrocities in their country. The film stars Paz Vega (Spanglish, Sex and Lucia) and Mateo Honles, the child actor who portrays Jose Guevara. His performance is so emotional and authentic, showing a range of emotions way beyond his young years. He is known for Days of Light and The Ballad of Hortensia, but his impressive turn in this drama is certainly one to note for future film work. Additional cast includes Juan Pablo Shuk (Netflix series “Narcos”), Yancey Arias (“Queen of the South”), Jeff Fahey (Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty), among others.

“Fireflies at El Mozote is a deeply moving film that we believe will resonate strongly with U.S. audiences,” said Yari, CEO of Magenta Light Studios. “We are proud to bring this story to theaters and honor the legacy of director Ernesto Melara. The film is produced by Moctesuma Esparza (Selena), Elias Axume for Premiere Entertainment Group, and Bob Yari for Magenta Light Studios.

The film opens in theaters nationwide on April 17, with simultaneous releases in major markets, including Austin, TX; Los Angeles; New York; Miami; Chicago; Houston; and additional cities across the country. In Austin, the film is available on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Galaxy Theater, and for showtimes for Thursday and future dates, visit galaxytheaters.com
