Austin, Texas — The Austin Film Critics Association is pleased to announce its selection of three new members to its 2013 roster:
Joe Gross has been writing about film, music and entertainment at the Austin American-Statesman since 2002. He has been writing about film, music, books and popular culture since 1997. He has contributed to Spin, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice, Vulture and elsewhere. He is a native of Falls Church, Virginia, perhaps the Chocolate City’s most vanilla suburb. He lives in Austin with his family.
Matt Shiverdecker has been writing about film and popular culture since 2010 when he joined the staff of Austinist.com. His work has been featured at the Austin-American Statesman, Paste Magazine and most recently, Slackerwood. While always a huge movie buff, he previously spent 12 years as an on-air host and music programmer at WOXY.com, an acclaimed indie rock internet radio station.
Alex Williams is a fourth-year film student at the University of Texas. Alex has been writing for The Daily Texan for three years, and has exhaustively covered film festivals such as South by Southwest, Fantastic Fest, and Austin Film Festival. A native Texan, Alex enjoys horror films, lively interviews, and freshly cooked brisket.
Founded in 2005 by Cole Dabney and Bobby McCurdy, the AFCA has seen its membership grow to over two dozen members with a diverse roster of professional film critics who regularly review movies for national television stations, daily newspapers, weekly alternatives, local radio, monthly magazines, and websites with international prominence. Each December, AFCA members vote on the year’s best in film, celebrating excellence on both sides of the camera.
The outlets AFCA members represent include Ain’t It Cool News, the Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Chronicle, Badass Digest, DVDActive, Fandango, FEARNet, Film.com, Film School Rejects, Hill Country News, Horror’s Not Dead, KOOP Radio, MSN Movies, Movies.com, ScreenCrush, Slackerwood, Smells Like Screen Spirit, Spill.com, Twitch, and YNN Austin.
