Movie Review: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Delivers Another Fun Installment

In the third movie of this successful franchise, Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen Ann O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) must face off with another powerful and fiery hedgehog named Shadow (Keanu Reeves). Shadow has endured much pain and heartbreak at the hands of G.U.N., a government organization that hopes to exploit Shadow’s power. While Shadow threatens the human race, Sonic and his team hope to discover why Shadow is on Earth and why he has destructive goals in mind.

Written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, and directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is another fun and thrilling installment in what is already a solid animated franchise based on a video game series. I enjoyed watching this movie, as I did with the previous installments. The filmmakers involved with this movie saga love the source material and know how to make it work well in their movies.

The returning cast members perform well, with Jim Carrey standing out in a special comedic dual role. The new addition, Keanu Reeves, is good as the voice actor for Shadow. Shadow is dark, tormented, and minimalist regarding conversations, so these traits work well for Reeves’ acting style. In addition, the action and thrills are executed superbly.

I enjoyed the first two movies and feel similarly about this latest entry in the Sonic The Hedgehog movie franchise. The film is now available in theaters, but watching it at home is also totally fine. While fun, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is not a must-see film in theaters.
