When the girl of his dreams, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), is kidnapped, Nate (Jack Quaid), who is incapable of feeling physical pain, turns his rare condition into an unexpected advantage in the fight to rescue her (IMDB).
Quaid gives a nuanced performance here and is well-suited for the comedic aspect of his character. I have also seen him do a great job in an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds where he portrays the animated character he voices from the Star Trek: Lower Decks series.
Nate’s unusual medical condition gives this film a unique perspective, which they take to extremes in every way to the advantage of the overall effect of this film. I must also mention other great performances from Midthunder, who also gave an excellent performance in Prey, part of the Predator film series—and Jacob Batalon, the best bud in the latest Spiderman films.
This film provides quite a fun ride, even though it is a bit predictable. Speaking of “fun ride”, I saw this film in a 4DX theater for the first time. The seats jolt and move, shooting mist and air at you, which I did not enjoy and don’t think it added anything to the viewing experience, but I know the kids will love it. Although it is an engaging experience, I will never go to one again.
Watching Nate come out of his shell to deal with what is happening around him is fun. The excellent comedic writing and performances make this film worth a look because it draws the audience into the story and makes you care about what happens.
