Review: NOVITIATE

Set in the early 1960s and during the era of Vatican II, a young woman, Sister Cathleen (Margaret Qualley), in training to become a nun struggles with issues of faith, the changing church and sexuality (IMDB).

This film instantly draws the viewer into the lives of several innocent young and non-worldly women exploring the possibility of becoming a nun for life in the Catholic Church. It is at times gut wrenching because they are exploring existential life issues that most of us spend our entire lives trying to resolve. I thought the Church was nurturing but these girls are repressed from day one to follow religious doctrine or suffer the consequences. Plus, this nunnery is cloistered which means hardly any contact with the outside world. Complete and total immersion in religious life.

As these girls traverse though the training, some are asked to leave while others decide to leave. It is interesting and difficult to watch the relentless exploration their faith on the path to marry God. I found this film to be excellently written, acted and made. However, it was also hard for me to watch because of my own beliefs. I would recommend watching this one Netflix or Hulu.
