Review: STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS

To say I am a Star Trek fan is an understatement because I have seen every television episode and movie over the years (classic Trek in re-runs, not to date myself too much).  I was absolutely elated when I saw J.J. Abrams revamp the franchise with his first attempt at Star Trek in 2009.  Let’s be honest, the franchise had become extremely stale and needed an infusion to give it new life.  And, my god that is exactly what Abrams brought to the table.  The opening sequence of the 2009 film goes down as one of the best I have ever seen.

In this latest installment we see the return of all the usual characters.  The choice of actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan is a stroke of brilliance. I really don’t have a favorite character anymore because all are diverse and wonderful in their own way and I have grown to love each one of them.  The writers have captured the essence of each of the original characters and have infused those traits into the newer characters which only enhance their performances.

No expense was spared on this latest edition of the new Star Trek saga and believe it or not I didn’t mind that it was in 3D.  This kind of film can be enhanced by the use of 3D if done in the correct way and I believe it is here.  The 3D is not too over the top and only adds to the overall visual look of this film.

This latest rendition in my opinion only takes the bar higher in regards to spectacular special effects, storytelling and acting when it comes to the franchise because the characters.  I anxiously look forward to the next rendition by J.J. Abrams.
