It has been ten years since the Fleetwood Mac singer has released a solo album. The bewitching and sultry “Queen of Rock n Roll” and her co-director, album producer and musical collaborator Dave Stewart have captured the process of writing, producing and editing Nicks’ latest solo effort, an album titled In Your Dreams. In addition to revealing her artistic modus operandi, Nicks also reflects on her past life experiences and how they have shaped her as a songwriter.
This personal documentary is often times fascinating and touching, but also has its share of tedious moments. I did enjoy the visual style which switches back and forth from the use of modern cameras to Stewart’s footage captured by an antique film camera. Through this film, I came to a greater appreciation of Stevie Nicks, the person, as she imparts her views on romance and art as well as a recent cause that she has taken to heart quite personally. Evans and Nicks do spend way too much time taking the audience through every mundane part of the writing and recording sessions and these scenes would often lose my interest. I’d recommend this film for serious Stevie Nicks fans, but probably not for casual listeners of her music. Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams is now available on iTunes for digital download.
