Review: THE FAVOURITE

In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah (IMDB).

This film is by far the most bizarre period piece I have ever seen. It went places I was not expecting in regards to interpersonal relationships. Sure, most people from this era did whatever they could to gain favor with royalty because it usually made their lives easier monetarily. I do not have a problem where it went, but it took me off guard because the trailer did not show this aspect at all.

One thing in particular grated on my nerves and that is the music at certain points in this film. There is a violin playing a staccato one note repeatedly for an extended period until it finally begins to build as the scene progresses. It distracted me somewhat because it felt like fingernails on a chalkboard in a way.

Overall, the writing, acting and cinematography are well done. Colman, Stone and Weisz gave spectacular performances. This film is a strong piece of work even though it truly annoyed me at times. I would recommend a matinee or waiting to see it online.
