Stephen Curry: Underrated

Stephen Curry: Underrated, directed by Peter Nicks, is a biographical documentary about the basketball athlete who plays for the Golden State Warriors. I am stating this for film fans who like documentaries and may not be huge sports fans or do not follow basketball athletes. I have spoken to some people with the Apple TV+ service and asked if they followed basketball, and they said no. Another, who has excellent knowledge of NCAA athletics and athletes, certainly knows of Stephen Curry (the son of an NBA player, Dell Curry). To all of them, I had recommended viewing the film to learn of his life when he was considered undersized in high school, then attended college at Davidson (where they went on to participate in the NCAA playoffs), and on to the present with the team winning championships.

“Underrated” includes footage from home movies and that available from the small college of Davidson (Division I) and their Davidson College Wildcats. Davidson coach Bob McKillop provides the history that may have yet to be captured on film. There are also interviews with Curry’s teammates.

Curry is shown to study for his college degree and then graduate, as he promised his mother.

During the closing credits, the audience hears former NBA star, now broadcaster Reggie Miller, speak of Curry’s career and three-point shooting.

Stephen Curry believed in himself, and the film shows those who did believe in him despite others not recruiting him. Being on the team where he is now a four-time NBA Finals champ took time and work.

Platoon released Tobe Nwigwe’s new single, Lil Fish, Big Pond, from the Apple Original Film and A24 documentary Stephen Curry: Underrated. The single is now available to stream on all major DSPs. Tobe debuted his first motion picture musical score in Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever in collaboration with Ludwig Göransson. He made his acting debut as a solid supporting character in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Mo, playing the role of Mo’s best friend, Nick. Tobe joined the cast of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, starring as Reek, best friend to the lead character Noah. He also holds the lone original song in the film “On My Soul,” featuring Nas and Jacob Banks.

Stephen Curry: Underrated (produced by Ryan Coogler) premieres July 21 in select theaters and Apple TV+.
