SXSW 2025 Movie Review: MAKE IT LOOK REAL, A Fascinating Look At The Work Of An Intimacy Coordinator

When making a movie or television show, there are many essential jobs, as these art forms and sources of entertainment are collaborative efforts. In recent years, a new crew member has risen in the ranks of importance to guarantee the comfort and safety of actors performing. That role is that of the intimacy coordinator. For anyone unfamiliar with this job, an intimacy coordinator works on both the sets of movies and television shows, tasked with the choreography of simulated sex scenes and working with the actors in an attempt to guarantee that no lines are crossed.

Make It Look Real is a documentary that follows the work of Claire Warden, an intimacy coordinator whose latest assignment is to assist with the sex scenes of a romantic drama titled Tightrope. The film offers an insightful look into how Claire works with both the director and the actors involved and serves as a mediator between all acting parties involved. It is reassuring to see her have the best interests of the actors performing in these awkward scenes, providing them with a genuine sense of comfort.

This documentary won’t appeal to everyone, but I found it fascinating. As someone who is always interested in learning more about filmmaking and television production, I found this film very enlightening. Anyone like myself who enjoys learning more about the process will absolutely love this film. It is also very comforting to know that filmmakers are being more proactive in preventing inappropriate sexual behavior and assaults on their productions.
