SXSW Film 2016 Review: HIRED GUN

Rating: 5 (Out of 5 Reels)

A documentary film about session and touring musicians that are hired by well-established and famous bands and artists like Metallica, KISS, and Billy Joel. These hired guns may not be household names, but are still masters of their craft (IMDB).

This is one of the best documentary films out there. The biggest names in the music industry have the undeniable best musicians in the world backing them up while recording and creating songs or out on tour. The problem is most people don’t know who they are. It is disheartening how these musicians are treated by the industry and some big named singers/songwriters. They put their entire heart and soul into help create/play the music and some are not given their due.

One story in particular that will catch the viewer is of Liberty DeVitto who was a drummer for Billy Joel for decades only to be suddenly excluded from everything without a single word from Joel himself. What a coward Joel is for not giving DeVitto the courtesy of telling him face to face what was about to happen. DeVitto thought that after decades of basically being part of Joel’s family that things would work out for him in the end.

This film is expertly made and will resonate with all variety of people because music is universal. This film absolutely shouldn’t be missed.
