SXSW Film 2016 Review: MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

By Renee’ Collins

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 5 Reels)

Roy (Michael Shannon), a father and his son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) go on the run after the dad learns his child possesses special powers (IMDB).

This film ultimately is about the bond between a boy and his caring parents. Roy and Sarah (Kristen Dunst) will do anything to help their son out of a bad situation regardless of his special powers.  Some will appreciate the silence it is at times in this film.  There are several scenes that do not have much dialogue.  Finding actors who can convey feelings without words is not an easy task and the choice of Shannon and Dunst were well made.

The special effects in this film are done well and they do add to the overall effect of this story. However, unfortunately there a couple of details that go unanswered that leave the audience thinking why, which most might find troublesome.  Overall this film is well made and acted but I wouldn’t bother paying full price.
