Bonnie and Matt are a devoted, successful young couple living in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. She is an architect, they both work long hours, and late one night after Bonnie goes out drinking with friends, and she walks the short trip back to her apartment alone. She is pulled into an empty building by an unknown man and sexually assaulted and beaten. At first she doesn’t even want to report it, but she finally does, and tells Matt.
She tells her friends and people at work that it was just a mugging. Matt reacts as one hopes he would; he is totally supportive and sympathetic. He does everything he can do to try to help, but Bonnie starts to pull away from him. She just wants things to go back to normal, but it is clear she has not really dealt with the traumatic effect the incident has had on her and fails to see how it is affecting every area of her life. How, and if she and Matt are able to go on with their lives makes up the rest of the film. Bonnie, played by Stephanie Beatriz, a cast member of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is better known for comedy, but does a great job in this drama. Matt (Michael Stahl-David) is also great.
The Bottom Line: This is an compelling film about an uncomfortable subject, and is handled in a realistic and non-sensational way. It is very well done.
