THE WRONG GIRLS: A Wildly Imaginative Stoner Adventure

I have said this previously, and I will say it again. I love an entertaining stoner comedy. I didn’t expect the latest stoner comedy to star both Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat. As much as I enjoy the acting of both actors, their roles as two major stoner friends are the least-likely scenario I ever would have expected. Still, both actors have it in them to deliver performances that make this comedy a fun ride. With some crazy, ridiculous ideas from writer/director Dylan Meyer, The Wrong Girls manages to set itself apart from the typical stoner films most cinephiles have experienced so far.

Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat) are two stoner roommates who don’t really have any aims in life, besides struggling to pay the bills and get high all the time. While Frankie works a delivery job and Molly wishes she could be a chef for stoners, they fall far behind on their rent and risk eviction. On one particular night out, Frankie gets mistaken for someone involved in a top-secret project involving a drug derived from squid. As a result, she comes into the possession of a briefcase filled with samples of the drug, and of course, both Frankie and Molly decide to sample the goods. Meanwhile, a group of Danish thugs is seeking to intercept the samples and steal them for a mysterious crime boss. The ladies see this golden opportunity to sell their newly discovered product and pay the rent so they can have a place to live.

The entire film is absolutely absurd, but also hilarious. Dylan Meyer and actors Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat make it all work well enough to deliver a ridiculous but amusing and entertaining movie. The movie also features performances by LaKeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, Geena Davis, and Kate McKinnon. All of whom play their parts well.

Both Stewart and Shawkat are an absolute riot, and it’s because of their commitment to their characters. Now, I know that stoner comedies are not everyone’s cup of tea, but those who enjoy this subgenre are guaranteed to have a good time with The Wrong Girls. It’s a silly, ridiculous, great time.
