I have enjoyed previous work by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his writing and directorial debut Don Jon will be high on my list of favorites.
Jon Martello (Gordon-Levitt) objectifies everything in his life: his apartment, his car, his family, his church and, of course, women. His buddies even call
him Don’t Jon because of his ability to pull “10’s” every weekend without fail. Yet even the finest flings don’t compare to the transcendent bliss he achieves alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Dissatisfied, he embarks on a journey to find a more gratifying sex life, but ends up learning larger than life and love through relationship with two very different women (SXSW).
There are some great actors in this film and they bring a depth to their characters in part because they are great actors but mostly because I believe this film is extremely well written. Scarlet Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza are delightful because they bring their characters to life rather convincingly.
I was impressed with the excellent pacing and edited pace of this film. Even though a major part of the film revolves around Don’s addiction to sex and porn
the manner in which it is shot and edited is classy because it is not raunchy at all. The music selections are used to convey the main characters moods and
feelings at times and I think that is brilliant when done well and it definitely is here. This film is fantastic and should be seen by all adults.
