London Film Festival Review: Prince -Explores Class Divisions Through an Absurdist Lens

Prince, a sharp, darkly comedic Uruguayan-Argentine feature, premiered at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 8th. Written and directed by Federico Borgia, the film is set in Punta del Este’s fading seaside luxury. The co-production is a sharp, stylish, and absurdist exploration of inheritance, class, domestic friction, and existential confusion. The film stars Roberto Suárez (The Saint), Maitina De Marco (27 Nights), and Esteban Bigliardi (Society of the Snow, The Delinquents).

Prince marks Borgia’s first solo feature since his acclaimed co-directed films Clever (2015) and The Champion of the World (2019), both with Guillermo Madeiro. In Prince, Borgia’s film explores class divisions and loneliness through an absurdist lens. It centers on Jaime (Suárez), a live-in butler at a luxury coastal estate. Jaime and Isabel (De Marco), the home’s owner, and Prince, a prize-winning Afghan Hound, are also lovers. She dies suddenly, and he becomes Prince’s appointed guardian, inheriting the entire estate. The humor shines when Jamie struggles to protect the dog from Isabel’s relatives who claim the inheritance.

There are so many stories of families fighting over property and estates, and the film highlights the characters’ pettiness and desperation. Jamie and his son care for Prince in the home he is used to, while Isabel’s son/granddaughter go to absurd lengths to find any opportunity to rid themselves of him, and Jamie stands between them. While it starts slowly, the action and friction escalate each day. The audience will not be amazed at how each character brings their ideas to the mix to gain the upper hand. With wealth and affluence comes greed—additional Cast: Cecilia Marani, Salvador Gaetán.
