Austin Local Events: The Austin Music Awards and Austin Music Industry Awards

By Liz Lopez

The Austin Music Awards return for their 38th year, celebrating the Austin music community and winners from the Austin Chronicle Music Poll.  The public is invited to see the results!

New this year, the first-round of Austin Music Awards (AMA) nominees were chosen by a collective body of Austin music experts, resulting in 5 nominees in 51 categories. Music lovers and Chronicle readers then cast their vote, and we’ll find out the results at the Austin Music Awards on March 11 at ACL Live at the Moody Theater as well as at its irreverent, industry-specific event the Austin Music Industry Awards on March 2 at Emo’s.

About the INDUSTRY AWARDS on MARCH 2, 7:30pm:

The Austin Music Industry Awards are a special celebration honoring winners of the industry-specific categories from the Austin Chronicle Music Poll. The Industry Awards are hosted by Kevin Curtin and Mike Wiebe and backed by the house band, Berkshire Hounds. Industry winners are announced the night of the show, including categories like Best New Club, Best Record Label, Best Music Non-Profit, and more.

About the AUSTIN MUSIC AWARDS on MARCH 11, 7:25pm:

As always, the Austin Music Awards continue to celebrate the winners from the Austin Chronicle Music Poll, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any changes. This year’s AMA show has adopted a “back to roots” intention with a more casual vibe and lower ticket prices for the public. Hosted by new emcees, comedian Chris Cubas and former AMA winner Jackie Venson, this year’s show will feature performances by Austin musicians and even some AMA winners. This year’s show promises to be more inclusive for all Austin communities, and you can expect more surprises and announcements soon.

Doors open at 6pm and tickets start at $30 and to find more details and how to purchase them, visit

The 2019/2020 Austin Music Awards are presented by The Austin Chronicle and The Society for the Preservation of Texas Music. Proceeds benefit the SIMS Foundation and Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM).

The Austin Music Awards recognizes the accomplishments of local bands and musicians by honoring them just prior to SXSW at an annual event unique to the City of Austin. The event reflects Austin’s outstanding live music achievements of the previous year as voted on by Austin Chronicle readers in the annual Austin Chronicle Music Poll.
