By Laurie Coker Rating: D Independence Day meets Die Hard (the first one) is how I describe Olympus has Fallen, a film about a group of Korean rebels who attack the White House and take all key figures captive. Starring Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart, Olympus has Fallen works far too hard to pull on… Continue reading Review: OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN

Review: ADMISSION
By Laurie Coker Rating: B- From the opening scene of Admission a new comedy starring the talented and funny Tina Fey and the equally appealing Paul Rudd, I knew I wanted to share clips with my senior students as they prepare to write college essays. More than that, however, because of excellent comic and personal… Continue reading Review: ADMISSION
Review: SPRING BREAKERS (SXSW 2013)
By Laurie Coker Rating: D+ From 1973 to 1986, every year (yes, starting in high school), my friends and I traveled to South Padre Island (only 100 miles from home) for spring break. I know firsthand and all too well, having held many a head over the toilet, the decadence and pandemonium typical of this… Continue reading Review: SPRING BREAKERS (SXSW 2013)
Review: The Croods
By Laurie Coker Rating: C+ There is great delight in finding a film that pleases the family – all ages. With so few animated features coming out each year – comparably – it’s nice to get one that holds the interest of both my grand kids. With one age eight and the other only two,… Continue reading Review: The Croods
2013 SXSW Review: DON JON
By Mark Saldana Rating: 4 (Out of 4 Stars) The uber-talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt writes, directs and stars in this superb portrait of a young man struggling to find happiness in his love life, but seeking it in the wrong places and people. Jon Martello, known to his admiring buddies as “Don Jon”, has a smooth… Continue reading 2013 SXSW Review: DON JON
2013 SXSW Review: DON JON
By Renee’ Collins Rating: 5 (Out of 5 Reels) I have enjoyed previous work by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his writing and directorial debut Don Jon will be high on my list of favorites. Jon Martello (Gordon-Levitt) objectifies everything in his life: his apartment, his car, his family, his church and, of course, women. His buddies… Continue reading 2013 SXSW Review: DON JON
Review: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
By Laurie Coker Rating: B- Occasionally someone mentions the length of my reviews. Just the other day, my sister chided me about my verbosity. Not because of these “critics,” but out of sheer necessity, this will be a brief reviews. With SXSW Film Festival starting today, I offer a glancing view of my opinion of… Continue reading Review: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
Review: 21 AND OVER
By Laurie Coker Rating: F- The Hangover films stopped appealing to me after the first installment, American Pie was only good with the first slice, and there should be no sequel for Bridesmaids (or copycat for that matter), and all for good reason. We have no limit on college party-fest films, like Animal House, Super… Continue reading Review: 21 AND OVER
Review: JACK THE GIANT SLAYER
By Laurie Coker Rating: B- When I can take my grandson to a film, I am one happy gal and when I can include my now two-year-old granddaughter too, I’m thrilled. While some might think Jack the Giant Slayer a bit heady for a toddler, I thought I’d give it a try. My grandson loved it and… Continue reading Review: JACK THE GIANT SLAYER
Review: A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD
By Laurie Coker Rating: F+ Not since the original Die Hard have any of its sequels measured up, and frankly, they have gotten progressively worse with each installment. Proof lies in the abysmal A Good Day to Die Hard, in which Bruce Willis reprises his role as the daredevil John McClane. Director John Moore certainly… Continue reading Review: A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD
