Concert Review: Austin City Limits New Tapings of Season 45 features groundbreaking singer/songwriter Rosalía

By Liz Lopez

Austin City Limits announced new tapings of their Season 45, featuring artists who are highlights of the namesake ACL Festival this year.  Among them making her ACL debut is the groundbreaking singer/songwriter Rosalía from Spain.

Rosalía, clad in a red and black outfit, successfully garnered new fans and satisfied her existing ones at her debut taping on October 8th. If anyone missed her at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on October 6th, she returns for another performance at the festival on Sunday, October 13th. Her vocals, along with the choreographed performances of six dancers clad in sheer red outfits over white, are mesmerizing and very memorable. She expressed her joy for being at the show and told the audience members she loved their energy. I am very glad to have experienced her performance in the intimate setting of the Moody Theater and look forward to seeing her on the large ACL Music Festival stage this weekend.

Rosalía’s landmark album, “El Mal Querer” (Bad Love), was released in 2018, a fusion of classic Flamenco with R&B and electronic beats, coupled with 26-year-old Rosalía’s nod to the visual arts, fashion and choreography that is strongly embraced by fans across the globe. The album’s breakout single “Malamente” garnered six 2018 Latin Grammy nominations and took home awards for Best Alternative Song and Best Urban Fusion Performance.

The Spanish star has an appearance alongside James Blake on his single “Barefoot in the Park,” and three singles of her own with the recent double track “Milionària & “Dio$ No$ Libre Del Dinero,” “Aute Cuture” and her widely-acclaimed, and frequent ‘Song of the Summer’ pick “Con Altura” with Reggaeton superstar J Balvin and featuring El Guincho. The video for “Con Altura” recently earned two MTV Video Music Awards wins including Best Latin Video and is 2019’s most-watched video from a female lead artist (now over 800 million views), reaching #1 on YouTube’s Global music video chart.
