Local Art News: In the Public Eye: New Work by Nathan ”SLOKE” Nordstrom

By Liz Lopez

Austin Community College and the Rio Grande Campus Kramer Gallery are host to the art exhibition of “In the Public Eye: New Work by Nathan “SLOKE” Nordstrom,” curated by ACC Instructor and Art Historian, Erin Keever. The exhibit remains until Sunday, May 14th. In conjunction with the exhibition, a screening will be held of the 1983 documentary film, “Style Wars”, on April 19th and a panel discussion featuring Sloke, Mez and Wake will be held beginning at 6 p.m. at ACC’s Rio Grande Campus Auditorium (Room 201, Building 1000). This event is free and open to the public.

An Austin native and former ACC student, Nordstrom is an internationally recognized graffiti artist with a strong exhibition history and numerous important commissions under his belt. He has both organized and appeared in several group shows including “Emerge” an annual spray can art show in Austin, “Pieced Together” the first nationwide tour of Texas spray can artists along with local solo shows like “testsite 16.1 Nathan“SLOKE” Nordstrom FATCAPPED at Fluent Collaborative’s test site and a solo show at The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, filling its impressive 3200- squarefoot gallery. He has worked with such companies as Apple, Facebook, Google, Nike and Redbull as well as The University of Texas at Austin, Seton Hospital with the America Heart Association, and now happily, Austin Community College.

While still creating public works, Nordstrom is increasingly interested in “taking the rawness and energy of the streets” indoors into a more intimate setting, raising questions about the significance of urban versus institutional context. This exhibition offers the opportunity to see a focused group of Nordstrom’s very latest paintings that possess the style and impact of his wall-sized works. To view his art on exhibit, there is no admission fee to the gallery that is open from Monday -Thursday 7 a.m. – 10 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information, contact thomas.hilton@acc.edu
