SXSW FILM ANNOUNCES 2013 FEATURES LINEUP 

Austin, Texas – January 31, 2013 – Marking its 20th Anniversary, the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival is thrilled to announce the features lineup for this year’s Festival, running March 8 – 16, 2013 in Austin, Texas. The 2013 lineup continues the SXSW Film celebration of the intersection between culture and creativity, revealing essential matters through personal stories. Featuring filmmakers both at the top of their game and at the start of a long and invigorating road ahead, each offers a unique vision on the world.

Today we announce 109 of the features that will screen over the course of nine days at SXSW 2013. The below lineup features 68 films from first-time filmmakers, and consists of 69 World Premieres, 14 North American Premieres and 5 U.S. Premieres. These films were selected from a record 2,096 feature-length film submissions composed of 1,482 U.S. and 614 international feature-length films. With a record number of 5,682 submissions total, the overall increase was 7% over 2012. The Midnighters feature section and the Short Film program will be announced on February 6, with the complete panel lineup and schedule to follow on February 13.

“It’s an incredible privilege to sift through so much exciting work, and every year brings new surprises. Though trends emerge after the fact, not consciously while we’re programming, much of this year’s program embraces love and the need/search/desire for connection,” says Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “Many films reflect importantly on our culture and include intimate looks at iconic figures, and we’re lucky to have a plethora of hugely entertaining and audience pleasing films. Even more thrilling is the opportunity to support so many filmmakers we’ve followed for years who’ve made enormous creative leaps in their work.”

The festival’s main competition categories are comprised of eight Narrative Feature world premieres and eight Documentary Feature world premieres, vying for their respective Grand Jury Prizes. All feature categories, with the exception of Headliners, will be eligible for category specific Audience Awards.

In addition to nine full days of film screenings, SXSW Film will ultimately feature over 150 informative and entertaining featured Conversations, panels, workshops and mentor sessions. Previously announced panels include A Conversation with Matthew McConaughey, Humanizing Heroes: Storytelling Beyond Sports, and the return of Jeffrey Tambor’s Acting Workshop among others.
